The Vermont Securities Division, in conjunction with the North American Securities Administrators Association, Inc. (“NASAA”), has released the following list of the “Top 10” scams.
Here are the “Top 10” investment scams, ranked roughly in order of prevalence or seriousness:
Older Americans cannot leave the fate of their retirement nest eggs to chance.
There is always some element of uncertainty in investing, but when the money at stake represents a lifetime of savings or a lump sum pension payment-money that is crucial for retirement and cannot be recaptured-taking undue risk may spell disaster. Unfortunately, it can sometimes be difficult for older investors to know when the risk is too great, or if they are being misled into investing in a product that is unsuitable to their needs.
Older Americans are the No.1 target of con artists. The files of state securities agencies are filled with tragic examples of seniors who have been cheated out of savings, windfall insurance payments and even equity in their homes.
This Regulation sets forth the requirements for the notice filing and the required fees with respect to certain federal covered securities; specifically, securities involved in private offerings exempt from federal registration under Rule 506 of Regulation D. The perpetrators of advance fee fraud, known internationally as "4-1-9 fraud" (after the section of the Nigerian penal code which addresses these schemes), are often very creative and innovative. A large number of victims are enticed into believing they have been singled out from the masses to share in multi-million dollar windfall profits for no apparent reason.
